KEY ARENA |

Key Arena, home of
the Seattle Supersonics may be one of the most interesting arenas in the
NBA. In 1966, Seattle was award the city’s first professional franchise,
the NBA Seattle Supersonics. The team began play in October 1967 at the
Seattle Center Coliseum. It opened in 1962 and had a seating capacity of
14,000. The Supersonics played at the Seattle Center Coliseum for over a
decade. Because the arena leaked and had a small seating capacity, the team moved
to the Kingdome, home of the Seattle Mariners (MLB) and Seahawks (NFL),
between 1978 until 1985. They then moved back to the Seattle Center
Coliseum after the 1984-85 season.

For nearly a decade the team continued to
play at the Seattle Center Coliseum. After the 1994 season, the coliseum
was completely rebuilt. Only the shell was kept using the supports and
roof trusses. Everything was scrapped and constructed new. Over $74
million was spent rebuilding the building. The court was lowered 35ft
and 3,000 seats were added. Key Bank bought the naming rights for $15.1
million over 15 years in 1995. The Seattle Supersonics played their
first game at the rebuilt Key Bank Arena on November 4, 1995 against the
Los Angeles Lakers. Today, the arena has a seating capacity of just over
17,000 with 1,700 club seats and 58 luxury suites. Since Supersonics
chairman Clay Bennett bought the club in 2006 he has tried to get a new
arena constructed for the team. However, he has been unsuccessful and in
November 2007 Bennett filed a request with the league to relocate the
team to Oklahoma City and the Ford Center. On April 13, 2008 the
Supersonics played their last game at Key Arena.
The Sonics needed to
escape the remaining two years of their downtown KeyArena lease either
by winning a court case with the city in June or by negotiating a
buyout. Oklahoma City voters approved funding for renovations to the
Ford Center in March 2008 leading the way for the Sonic possible move
from Seattle. On July 2, 2008 a Seattle judge ruled that the Sonics
could move to Oklahoma City for the 2008-09 season as part of a
settlement with the City of Seattle. The Sonics will pay $75 million to
the city in exchange for the immediate termination of the lease. The
team's name and colors will stay in Seattle.
