Prudential
Center
Newark, NJ
Located in the
heart of Newark, NJ, the Prudential Center is the temporary home of
the New Jersey Nets before they move into the Barclays Center in
Brooklyn in 2012. The arena is the primary home of the NHL's New
Jersey Devils. Discussions for a new arena for the Devils began in
the mid 1990s amidst rumors of the team moving to Nashville, TN. In
2002, the city approved funding for the construction of a new arena
in Newark. Constructed on a seven acre parcel, construction began in
October 2005. Prudential Financial purchased the naming rights to
the arena for $105.3 million over 20 years.

The
New Jersey Devils played their first game at the Prudential Center
against the Ottawa Senators on October 27, 2007. For over 25 years,
the Nets played at the Izod Center, a 19,000 seat arena in East
Rutherford, NJ. Like every other team in the NBA, the Nets want a
new arena built that includes more luxury boxes and club seats in
order to generate additional revenue. While their new arena, the
Barclays Center, in Brooklyn is constructed the team will play at
the Prudential Center. It seats 18,500 for basketball and features
2,300 club seats and a 350 seat restaurant. The Nets will play for
two seasons at the Prudential Center, the 2010-11 and 2011-12
seasons. |
