Known throughout
the NBA as one of the worst arenas, the Izod Center has been
the home of the New Jersey Nets for more than 25 years. Prior to moving
into their current home, the Nets played at the Louis Brown Athletic
Center from 1977 until 1981. Located on the campus of Rutgers University,
this arena had a seating capacity of only 8,000 and was too small for a
NBA team. A new arena for the Nets was constructed in the Meadowlands
Complex, the location of Giants Stadium in 1977.

Originally known
as the Brendan Byrne Arena, the Nets played their first game at the new
arena on October 30, 1981,
losing to the New York Knicks. In 1996 Brendan Byrne
Arena was renamed Continental Airlines Arena when the airline purchased the
naming rights for $29 million over 12 years. It was renamed the Izod Center
in October 2007 when Izod bought the naming rights for $1.4million a year. The arena has a seating
capacity of 19,040 with 29 suites but has no club seats. It is known
throughout the league as one of the worst arenas. Currently, the Nets are in
the process of having a new modern arena constructed in Brooklyn, the
Barclays Center. |
